the holiest of holy • jerusalem, israel

This is a city where around every corner there's something not only a couple thousands of years old but something sacred and holy. The city oozes sanctity and longing for it—from the covered women huddled in front of a gold-plated mosque to the men rocking in unison praying in front of the Western Wall to the hands spread atop the Church of the Holy Sepulchure's Stone of Unction seeking a bit of sanctity (and perhaps just a bit of sanity). Let's hope this city of peace remains just that.

Note: The one modern-looking photo is the only one taken outside Old Jerusalem. The mirrored sculpture entitled Turning the World Upside Down, Jerusalem is by Anish Kapoor, the same artist who made Cloud Gate in Chicago.

the rose city • petra, jordan

Petra is one of the most incredible places I've ever visited. The space is incredible not only for it's endless supply of impressive, jaw-dropping buildings carved by hand into the soft sandstone rock; or its role as former Hollywood movie set locale for Indiana Jones and the Last Crusades; but for the fact that this city in the middle of nowhere was once inhabited by 30,000+ people and built in the 6th century B.C.! While it would have been ideal to photograph the ever-changing colors of the rock at sunrise or sunset, I still was able to capture a decent array of colors.
